Suspended for keywords in your business name
Adding a city, a service or a slogan to your profile name breaks one of the most clearly written rules in Google's guidelines. The fix is simple but strict: the name on Google has to be the name customers see on your sign, your website and your paperwork.
Not sure which rule you broke?
Start with the free suspension risk checker: answer 13 quick questions and get a risk score plus the Google rule and fix guide behind each point. Nothing is sent to us.
Or let a person do it: ProfileRescue checks your listing and website against each guideline, ranks the likely causes for your case and writes the appeal text plus an evidence checklist, in English and Spanish, as a PDF for €29 (launch price, €49 from 1 Dec 2026). We cannot reinstate profiles or remove reviews, and we say so plainly.
What Google's rule says
Google's Guidelines for representing your business on Google say your name should reflect your real-world business name, as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery and as known to customers, and that "including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile".
What is not allowed in the name
Google lists these, among others:
- Marketing taglines and slogans ("Best Prices Guaranteed").
- Store codes and trademark symbols such as ®.
- All-capital letters unless that is how the business really writes its name.
- Hours ("24/7", "Open 24 hours") and phone numbers or URLs.
- Special characters and legal terms (LLC, Ltd) unless they are part of the real-world name.
- Service or product words that are not part of the real name ("Plumbing & Drain Repair").
- Location words such as your city or neighbourhood, unless they are part of the real name.
- Information about the building you are inside, and the same name repeated in two languages.
Examples
| On Google | Sign and paperwork say | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Joe's Locksmith 24/7 Emergency Austin | Joe's Locksmith | Joe's Locksmith |
| BEST DENTIST | Smile Studio | Smile Studio | Smile Studio |
| Garcia Law – Car Accident Lawyer Miami | Garcia Law | Garcia Law |
If your registered name really contains a service or city word ("Austin Plumbing Co." on the licence, van and sign), it is allowed. The test is real-world use, not what ranks.
Fix it before you appeal
- Change the name on the profile to the exact name on your sign, website and registration.
- Move services to the services list and categories, and hours to the hours field.
- Make sure your website header, invoices and signage use the same name, because that is the evidence Google compares against.
Changing the name can trigger re-verification: Google's verification help says this is likely when business details were recently updated. Read suspended after an edit before you change anything else.
How to appeal once the cause is fixed
- Fix the cause on the profile first. Google says the name and address on your profile must match the name and address on your documents (Fix suspended or disabled profiles).
- Gather proof Google lists as examples: business registration, business licence, tax certificate, utility bill. Photos of permanent signage and of the premises help.
- Open the appeals tool from your profile. It shows the date, the reason, a link to the policy and whether the decision can be appealed.
- Submit once, carefully. Google says "Appeals can only be submitted once", and the evidence form has to be completed within 60 minutes of starting it.
- Do not create a new profile while you wait. Google tells owners not to.
Step-by-step wording: what to write in the appeal (template + evidence checklist).
FAQ
Can I keep my city in the name?
Only if it is part of your real-world name, used on your sign, website and paperwork. Google lists location information as not allowed when it is not part of the name.
Will removing keywords hurt my ranking?
Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Categories, services and a complete profile are the allowed ways to show what you do.
What proof shows my real name?
Google lists business registration, licences, tax certificates and utility bills, and the name on them must match the name on the profile. Photos of permanent signage help.
