How to respond to negative auto repair reviews
Most bad garage reviews are about money, time or a fault that came back. Answer each one specifically, then take the details off the review page.

The rules
- Thank the customer and name the issue: the quote, the delay, the repeat fault.
- Do not admit a mistake in public before you have checked the job. “I'm sorry you were disappointed” is not an admission; “our mechanic got it wrong” is.
- Do not post the invoice, the registration number or the customer's full name.
- Do not argue line by line about the bill. Offer to go through it together by phone or in person.
- Do not promise a free repair or refund unless you are offering one.
- Never make a refund, discount or freebie conditional on the customer changing or deleting the review. In the US the FTC's rule on reviews (in force since 21 Oct 2024) bans incentives conditioned on a review's sentiment and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation (FTC).
- Google reviews your reply before it appears (usually within minutes), shows it publicly as the business and notifies the customer, who can then edit their review (Google).
What not to write
- “You approved the extra work on the phone.”
- “Anyone who knows cars would understand.”
- “We'll redo it for free if you remove this review.”

FAQ
Should I explain the technical reason for the extra cost?
Briefly, at most, and without the customer's details. The useful conversation happens on the phone.
The customer is wrong. Can I say so?
You can state a fact politely, but readers side with whoever sounds calmer. Offer to talk instead.
